"O artist!—O haunted one!—O erring genius!—behold the two worst foes,—the False Ideal that knows no God, and the False Love that burns from the corruption of the senses, and takes no lustre from the soul!"
- E. Bulwer-Lytton in the novel Zanoni.
These two "worst foes" seem like mirror images of each others in the sense that an ideal that draws outside of itself the holistic point of view that "knows God" is lacking Love, and the false love - the burning passion towards the illusions of the sensory world knows not of the magic of the sphere of holistic Ideal - the workings of manas.

"The powers of the human passions that are in us, when they are entirely restrained, become more vehement; but when they are called forth into energy, gradually and commensurately, they rejoice in being moderately gratified, are satisfied; and from hence, becoming purified, they are rendered tractable, and are vanquished without violence."

Re: Quotations relevant to the Path
"Long before reaching the Way, he who has entered the track must know that it is a voyage with no return. We generally translate that by saying that the Way has a single direction. That is correct, for somebody who throws himself into the adventure which is the seeking of the Way, cannot return to the state he was before his departure. The Word of Truth is a living word, and works within anyone who has tasted it, even if he does not think of it at all. Knowing this, one must think well before taking the track which leads to the Way. But for him who has already started this journey, all hesitation must be banished. Firmness is then indispensable."
