Just got a bunch of CDs from the library to listen to in my car: PJ Harvey, Billy Idol, New Order, Joy Division, Lords of the New Church, The Cure, Pyhät Nuket, Musta Paraati and Girlschool.

Damn good music!

Today is the 60th birthday of Madonna, one of my favourit artists. This summer I've been listening to her "The Immaculate Collection". Each song blows my mind.

Last night I listened to Beethoven's seventh symphony while drunk. This morning, I listened to his eighth while hung over. Both were awesome!

I've also been meaning to write something about Sweden's Shining, my Black metal first love. I always feel somehow protected while listening to them (him). There is indeed something motherly about Niklas Kvarforth. That his songs always sound exactly the same has to do with it; that they are always about the same things, even more. He can absolutely be relied on to console the lost with death and filth.

This specific kind of homeliness could probably never have arisen had I not originally been scared shitless by Shining. And I'd of course never been so scared had I not, even then, felt such a strong pull toward this "saying no to life med stil"-thing.

In other words, Nikke went dark mother from - bright seducer.

The opening riff of "Låt oss ta allt från varandra": much more like a rift through which an inhumanly bright light can be glimpsed, than like some indefinite surge of blackness, or even a cut in one's own flesh. Much clearer than life, than time’s ”it was”.

The literal shining as erotic glamour as well as light at the end of the tunnel.

The twin tastelessnesses of pop and metal.

Kvarforth might have been the first to introduce me to the practical concept of irony — the irony of having one's speculation on theodicy interrupted by a trip to the supermarket. Nowadays I can readily imagine even his kind of artists of the extreme doing mundane things, but this is the result of a long struggle, about which I’m not sure wether I’ve won or lost. Should I still be laughing?

The divine leading star has transformed into a leaden star; it is more tangible, closer to the earth now. If I’m lucky, this signifies the fulfillment of a promise — if not, the collapse of ideality.

I’m sure Nikke would only hope the worst for me <3

One of my all-time fave Swedish bands is Lifelover. Usually I listen to it drunk alone at night. It's sooo depressing. :|

It’s almost like Lord Voldemort is baking waffles or Sauron needs a monocle because of his myopia.

Always.
I don’t think I would be still around without that bittersweet taste of (self)-irony and black humor. Especially when it comes to the occult there is no other way to deal with the growing dissonance for it is very too bizarre to be communicated otherwise.

...now here is an alibi song so you can’t blame me to post off-topic.

Soap & Skin – Vater

It’s a young girl from Austria who wrote this song about her father's death. She is not a very good singer but I love the authentic atmosphere of her songs.

Welch ein Zufall... - Narrow has been at the top of my playlist for much of the summer. This song in particular I found startlingly beautiful. I'm no musician so I don't really have an opinion on wether Plaschg "really" can sing or not, but I love her voice. So dark; by turns soft and metallic.

Ja, das ist wirklich ein Zufall.
She is not very famous here and I was pretty sure that nobody would know her. It's an honest kind of music that is naturally dark. I don't like musicans who are trying to sound dark by force. I love „Vater“ in particular because of the beautiful text and the way she tries to hide her austrain accent.

Today is one those cherished occasions the magnificent choir of Le Mystère des voix Bulgares sing to me. Besides the superior traditional songs, they have these passages where they let their voices create every-day-sort of harmonies and timbres. Sharp tones like a mother calling her children in for a dinner etc. There's also serene passages — clean and pure in a style the Christian choirs tend to go for, but there is another kind of purity in the common voice style. When the common meets with so beautiful melodies it is something I can't describe, but I have this image of the choir in a traditional costumes with rich patterns as symbols of their individual voices vibrating out of their chests accumulating in to this big one voiced Goddess.

I really like the singing technique used in some Slavic folk songs I have heard. Thank you for sharing this!
