I guess it had to come this. Very well then, I proclaim that everyone shall henceforth bow down to Philip K. Dick. All those who shan't, shall't be burnt.
And because everything is, and must be Black and white. I'll choose the Dick side in this war.

I’ll never turn to the Dick side of the force!
Even if you start an inquisition about this, the Pratchett front will stand its ground. One day you will all recognize that I’m right and convert to mighty Terry. (I promise to bake you cookies if you do)

What use are your puny Dicks and Terrys against the mighty Lovecraft!

I haven't read Terry Prachett at all. I'm such a baby and still hold nostalgic feelings to the teenage years and summer days spent reading Dragonlance series and quite often hope that one day I'll read all the books again. I think I haven't read much other fantasy books besides those. I find myself on various sides of this battle as I've read a lot of Philip K. Dick and consider him as one of my favourite authors just like Lovecraft to whom I return every now and then. Phil Dick is more on the modern paranoia side, still believing that there is something good beyond the veils of our life today, while Lovecraft doesn't give us much hope. Btw, I wonder how I never really noticed, until the the latest re-read, that in the Fall of Lucifer (or was it some other book?) fra Nefastos wrote something like that we as humanity can be considered as bacteria in the more cosmic scale of existence. I guess that is closer to the Lovecraftian view of things, but of course that's just one very limited point of view and somewhat taken out of it's context by yours truly :) I sometimes believe fantasy to be more real than the life we are living. It just hasn't descended to the veils of flesh to struggle with the physical friction where magic happens but mostly so invisibly or slowly that the battle of mages would be more boring to watch than it is on the so called fictional, maybe more correctly imaginative level. Well, I guess that last sentence just invalidated it's point but I guess writing in this topic one doesn't need to stay consistent.

Okay, I'll give you that one.
Puny Dicks won't stand long against Lovecraft and Terry probably plays in another league too.

Well said. I think this is why I like fantasy and mythology so much.
And no..we don't need too much consistency around here. 8-)

I absolutely adore Pratchett. I read him first in my late teens and he was a big influence on my maturation away from a smartass who thought she was better than everyone else. I remember the passage about the woodcutter (Witches Abroad, maybe?) hitting me like a truck as I realized that there's nothing wrong about a simple existance. Paraphrased: "The woodcutter lived in in his cottage in the woods and cut wood. There isn't much more to say about some people." Pratchett's satire is like that: brutally honest but loving.

Ha! So we are two now. Let's find more Pratchett fans and take over the forum.

Terry had a great talent to put the bitter impasses of life into humor that would almost be naive without his winking cynicism.
In addition I like the absurd little magical worlds he creates.
