I would like to add this because sometimes people are confused:

The Star of Azazel is based in Finland, but we accept applications from all over the world.

Despite being referred to as "brotherhood", the Star of Azazel does not discriminate any gender; we have both Fratres as well as Sorors in our ranks. Men and women are equally welcome in our fraternity. We use the term brotherhood / fraternity simply because there is not a non-gender word to describe well what we do or are.

The Star of Azazel does not process applications this month. Applications can still be sent in, but they will be processed in August.

We thank you for your patience and look forward to hearing from you.

In August we will also give information of our international lodge. Stay tuned!

As we announced on our news section on Sunday, the Star of Azazel has undergone a structural change:

The Star of Azazel has given up its central management. This structural change took place on July 7th 2018. From now on, the Brotherhood will work through its Lodges, which function autonomously. The Chalice Aspect is presently the only common governing body, and it will unite the Lodges.

Both old and new members must now join one or several Lodges – Lodge membership replaces general membership in the Star of Azazel. More information on each Lodge can be found on the forums, or can be inquired about through e-mail – either to the common mailbox or to the guide of the Lodge in question (guides name@azazel.fi). Membership applications can still be sent to the common P.O. Box, where they will be transmitted to the chosen Lodge.

Any possible questions regarding this subject will be answered willingly on the forums or through e-mail.

At the time of writing this post, we have ten Lodges in Finland and one international Lodge; Lodge Phanes.

For those wishing to join Lodge Phanes please note that we only accept written applications. Your application must be dated and undersigned. We kindly ask you to read the guidelines on how to apply here and to make your application with great care. Lodge Phanes accepts applicants worldwide who are minimum of 18 years of age. As Lodge Phanes has members around the world, we do not have a geochakric meeting place (a lodge house, or lodge meetings). Membership is free of charge, as is applying.

The work in Lodge Phanes requires time, dedication and the ability to function and work independently. We do not offer a pupil-teacher kind of guidance. Our main visible work towards the world is to support lodges emerging on a international level, to distribute, publish and translate our material into English (and possibly other languages) and to strive towards unity, love and truth under those principles which are in line with the philosophy of the Star of Azazel. Each of our members is different, with unique talents, interests and levels of learning. We do not require years of practice from our applicants (beginners are welcome too), but it is recommendable that you read through the material on the website in order to determine if the Star of Azazel is the kind of work and philosophy you would like to live in your every day life. We accept theistic, agnostic and atheistic applicants.

We require that our members are able to communicate in English, and undersign the constitution of the Star of Azazel, it’s seven principles (or/particularly the “Hieroglyphic Key” (striving toward a loving, honest and wholesome development) and the three theosophical principles.

If you have any questions, we are happy to help you. You can email, write here on the forums or send us a private message. All meaningful inquiries will be answered as soon as possible.

Lodge Phanes contact personnel: Silvaeon, Heith
Email us at name @ azazel.fi

Those sending in applications; if you don't hear from us within three weeks of sending your application, please send us an email. Sometimes letters go lost. We do answer all of our applicants.

An interesting change, especially from a left hand path perspective.
But it brings up some questions.
Since there may be other interested readers I decided to ask them publicly.
Choosing a lodge right away might be a barrier for an applicant because it is hard to decide one without knowing much about the inner work of each lodge.

Let’s assume someone joins lodge Phanes but decides that another lodge would fit better after some time. Is it possible to switch or does it require a new application?
Would it even make sense for Non-Finns to choose a lodge that is located in Finland or does the membership require geographic proximity?

There is no limit to how many lodges one may be part of. Each lodge has its own requirements so ones location may or may not be important question. Also if you're a member of say lodge Phanes a new application may be needed to join another lodge. It all depends on the lodge specific policy. Lodges, that'll choose so, will give information of their operation outwards, so new applicants to the Star of Azazel and that particular lodge will have a good idea what kind of angle the lodge approaches the Work from.

This in essence is no different then the question of joining the brotherhood, as one does not know of the inner work of the fraternity either. Joining is always a leap of faith, and in a way that is a good thing. The ability to function in lodges and in the fraternity in general boils down to the individual's expectations and their ability to study independently -sometimes completely isolated from other members due to great distances which can be very hard- and when required, intensely and productively in groups. We do have members who have been with us for years but have never physically met the others.
Red Bird wrote:Would it even make sense for Non-Finns to choose a lodge that is located in Finland or does the membership require geographic proximity?
All of the lodges in Finland currently listed by the time I write this do require that the members are physically present at meetings -some require 100% attendance while other lodges do not- so in that way it makes no sense to join a lodge if one is unable to attend. It may also be possible to visit in other lodge meetings if one is a member of a SoA lodge. We have some members who attend almost every meeting available regardless of lodge, and then some don't do that. And of course, we have guest speakers/lecturers from one lodge to the other if there is a certain field they are well versed in.

All of the lodges that we vouch for -basically this means that we know they work in line with SoA philosophy, are run by reliable long term brethren etc.- are listed on the fraternity's website. As lodges have full autonomy of their policies, it is good to contact the lodge guide or acolyte (listed on the lodge page) directly for queries. Lodge Phanes questions we can of course answer here as well, as we are active online.

There is also a third international lodge Hermes, that is dedicated to rational study of both esotericism and mainstream Western philosophy.

We just began a reading circle on Antoine Faivre's Western Esotericism - A Concise History.
